Storage Conditions Store at controlled room temperature 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Protect from light. Controlled substance (Schedule IV).
Dosages

Horse

  • 0.1 mg/kg (0.05 mg/lb) body weight (1.0 mL per 100 kg / 220 lbs) (Intravenous (IV)) — Analgesia lasts up to 3 to 4 hours; may be repeated every 3 to 4 hours as required (max 48 hours)

Indications
  • Relief of pain associated with colic in adult horses and yearlings.
  • Alleviation of moderate to severe musculoskeletal pain and surgical pain in horses.
Contraindications
  • Do not use in horses with known hypersensitivity to butorphanol tartrate.
  • Do not use in horses with severe hepatic or renal disease.
Precautions
  • Rapid IV administration may cause transient ataxia, head nodding, or restlessness.
  • Do not use in horses intended for human food.
  • Use with caution in horses with cardiac arrhythmias or severe respiratory disease.
Side Effects
  • Mild sedation, transient ataxia, muscle twitching, decreased gastrointestinal motility, and mild respiratory depression.
