Dosages

Dog

  • 125 mcg/m2 body surface area applied to the oral mucosa between the cheek and gum (Oromucosal application) — Administer at the first signs of anxiety or prior to anticipated noise event; can be re-dosed at intervals of 2 hours up to 5 times

Indications
  • Treatment of noise aversion in dogs associated with fireworks, thunderstorms, construction, gunshots, or other loud noises.
Contraindications
  • Do not use in dogs with severe cardiovascular, renal, or hepatic disease.
  • Do not use in dogs that are clinically depressed or lethargic.
Precautions
  • Dexmedetomidine is an alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist; monitor heart rate and mucous membrane color.
Side Effects
  • Transient pale mucous membranes, sedation, bradycardia, hypothermia, or mild emesis.
