Dosages

Horse

  • Sedation: 20 to 40 mcg/kg (0.2 to 0.4 mL/100 kg) IV or IM; Analgesia: 20 to 40 mcg/kg IV or IM (Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM)) — Onset 2-5 minutes IV; duration of action lasts 45 to 120 minutes depending on dose
Withdrawal Periods

Horse

Meat: 2 days
Indications
  • Sedation and analgesia in horses to facilitate examinations, diagnostics, tube passings, wound treatments, dental procedures, and minor surgery.
  • Visceral analgesia for horses experiencing colic pain.
Contraindications
  • Do not use in horses with atrioventricular (AV) heart block, preexisting bradycardia, or congestive heart failure.
  • Do not use in horses in endotoxic or traumatic shock.
  • Do not administer concurrently with potentiated sulfonamides.
Precautions
  • Horses can kick defensively despite profound sedation; handlers must exercise caution.
  • Causes pronounced bradycardia, cardiac conduction blocks, and respiratory depression.
  • Do not feed horse until full recovery and swallowing reflex have returned.
Side Effects
  • Marked bradycardia, first- and second-degree heart block, piloerection, sweating, ataxia, and transient penile prolapse.
