Sulfaclozine sodium monohydrate

In chickens and turkeys: treatment of coccidiosis at an early stage of infection and salmonellosis caused by Salmonella gallinarum at an early stage of infection.

Do not use in severe hepatic or renal dysfunction, diseases associated with markedly reduced water intake or substantial fluid loss, damage to the haematopoietic system, hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, or sulfonamide resistance. Do not use for Eimeria tenella or Eimeria necatrix infections in chicken chicks. Do not use in chickens or turkeys whose eggs are intended for human consumption.

Ensure adequate water intake during treatment. For coccidiosis, identify the causative organism before treatment to establish the appropriate dosage. Use should take susceptibility/resistance information into account. Avoid direct skin contact and inhalation during handling or administration; gloves and a dust mask should be worn. In clinically severely affected or anorectic birds, a parenterally administered product may be preferable. After treatment, clean drinking equipment to avoid subtherapeutic residues that may promote resistance.

Hepatic damage and allergic reactions may occur. In poultry, anorexia, diarrhoea, reduced egg production, growth depression and haemorrhages are reported as rare adverse effects. Prolonged administration may cause blood-count abnormalities due to impaired leukopoiesis, including agranulocytosis and thrombocytopenia.
