Tiamulin hydrogen fumarate

Veterinary use in pigs, chickens, turkeys and rabbits. In pigs: treatment of swine dysentery caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, colitis caused by Brachyspira pilosicoli, ileitis caused by Lawsonia intracellularis, and enzootic pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. In chickens: treatment and prevention of chronic respiratory disease and airsacculitis caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae. In turkeys: treatment and prevention of infectious sinusitis and airsacculitis caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma meleagridis and Mycoplasma synoviae. In rabbits: treatment and prevention of epizootic rabbit enterocolitis.

Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to tiamulin or any excipients. Do not use in animals or birds receiving products containing ionophores such as monensin, narasin or salinomycin during treatment or for at least 7 days before or after treatment, because severe growth depression or death may result.

Use should be based on susceptibility testing of bacteria isolated from the animal, or when this is not possible, on local, regional or farm-level epidemiological susceptibility information. Inappropriate use may increase the prevalence of bacteria resistant to tiamulin. Animals with reduced water intake or in a debilitated condition may require parenteral treatment. Water intake in birds should be monitored during treatment, particularly in hot weather, because tiamulin can reduce water intake in a concentration-dependent manner.

In pigs, erythema or mild skin oedema may occur rarely; hypersensitivity reactions such as dermatitis, erythema and pruritus have also been reported and are usually mild and transient. In chickens, turkeys and rabbits, no adverse reactions were known in the cited veterinary SPC.
